Loyalton, California is a town of about 800 souls located in the Sierra

Valley, the largest Alpine Valley in North America. It is the largest town in

Sierra County, which has a total population about 3000 people. Sierra

Valley is home to a number of ranches which produce beef cattle and hay

and Loyalton is home to people who work in many different professions

locally, and in nearby cities. Loyalton epitomizes small-town America and at

its elevation of 5000 feet, inspires individual responsibility and self-

resilience.

The valley was originally settled by Swiss pioneers, who understood how to

raise cattle at high elevation. They produced cheese and other dairy

products and supplied hay and other fodder to the miners in the Gold

Country to the west. Many of these same families still operate these same

ranches in the valley.
